As Gossip Girl would announce, it’s officially fall! The new season is here, and I’m sure most of us are excited for it. Though new trends come and go very often, we want to make sure that authenticity and good basics are in our wardrobe, so we don’t have to spend money on every single new thing social media tells us to buy. Capsule pieces and great essentials can remain the same every year, and we can incorporate trends without buying a bunch of new stuff—just by using what we already have. I wrote about fall trends in one of my recent posts, but now I want to share my thoughts on how to make an effective selection from your closet to look timeless and chic this season.

Fall wardrobe essentials
Choose Your Basics Right
- Good neutrals: I’m like a broken record when it comes to saying that great-quality basic pieces should be in your closet to create plenty of versatile outfits. Colors like gray, white, black, beige, and navy are timeless, and they’re the best neutrals to have in your wardrobe because you can vary them with many different accessories. It’s easy to layer them now that the weather is getting chillier. These neutrals can be easily mixed and matched with statement, bolder pieces and patterns. It makes your life easier to select an outfit with just capsule pieces, adding a good layer on top that represents your style and taste.

Layering essentials: As the weather gets colder, we need to make sure we have the right long-sleeves, turtlenecks, and sweaters to build an outfit around, layering them with basic summer tops.
Good quality denim: We all know that denim is always trending, though with different shades and styles. For me, denim is something I want to feel comfortable and cozy in. When looking for new jeans or jackets, these are my main criteria. For the fall season, the best option is to find dark-washed or black denim that fits your body type, so you can use it in various outfits and feel comfy at the same time.
Embrace Textures
- Knit and wool: A good-quality knit and wool sweater or cardigan are capsule pieces in a fall closet. If you ensure the material is great and pay attention to how you wash them, they’ll stay in your wardrobe for years. These pieces are also great opportunities to play around with different colors and patterns, serving as statement pieces in an outfit.

Suede and leather: Suede is a huge trend at the moment, and I’m sure most of us have seen it across our Pinterest boards. Again, if you choose the right material and quality, you can embrace these textures year after year and still look trendy. I suggest going for a suede bag or jacket that can be styled in several ways without making it look like you’re trying too hard to keep up with trends. I bought a suede jacket three years ago, and I wear it every season. Now I can look on-trend without buying anything new. Different forms of leather also make great capsule pieces if you find something that suits your style. Neutral colors like black, beige, brown, or green are eternal fall colors and can help you easily build outfits around them.
Layering Pieces
- Jackets: Lightweight layering options are perfect for transitional outfits, like trench coats, denim, and leather jackets. These are also staple pieces that you can wear every year, and if you don’t own them yet, you can easily find them in second-hand and thrift shops, so you don’t have to rely on fast fashion to get one.
- Scarves: Huge, chunky scarves are very much in this season, especially as statement pieces in an outfit. Bold-colored scarves can make an outfit look unique and authentic. But if you’re like me and prefer neutrals in accessories, earth tones are a great and timeless solution for this trend. I own the perfect wool scarf in a chocolate brown color, and last season, I wore it almost every other day when the weather got colder. It goes perfectly with everything and really adds a cozy, chic vibe to your look.

Wool coats: A great wool coat is essential in my wardrobe. If you choose the right tailoring for your height and body type, it will stay with you forever. These can be expensive purchases, so make sure to try on many different options to find what works best for you, including the color and fit of the coat.
Plan for Versatility
- Mix and match: I always suggest building your wardrobe around pieces that can be worn in multiple ways, saving you time when putting together an outfit. Capsule pieces are perfect in every season, and adding a statement blazer with patterns or animal prints makes the outfit pop. If you like to play around with colors, fall is the perfect time to do so. Layering opens up new opportunities to incorporate bolder colors into your outfit, such as colorful sweaters, shirts, sneakers, or bags.

Plan for day-to-night: Keep a few pieces from your spring/summer wardrobe that can transition from daywear to nighttime looks. Most of us don’t have time to go home and change after work if we have evening plans, so dresses and monochrome outfits can be perfect for this. Just change your shoes and add a few accessories to create a more polished nighttime look.
